Aquatots In The Community

Aquatots are supporting young mothers living in Gloucestershire to experience swimming sessions with their babies.

Aquatots offered two new Mums aged 16 and 19 free enrolment on to our 2015 Winter Term ‘Duckling’ course which specialises in using submersion style techniques to teach babies vital lifesaving skills.

Both babies have completed the Duckling level and one has now progressed up to our next level ‘Cygnets’ which began this month. Another new Mum will be joining the ‘Duckling’ level - we continue to offer these courses at no cost.

The courses are held at Paternoster School’s hydrotherapy pool where babies as young as 8 weeks old can start swimming due to the warm temperature of the pool and poolside area.

The Mums are introduced to Aquatots through the ‘Ready, Steady, Baby’ group that runs in Cirencester through the Churn Project.  The group leaders felt that the unique bonding experience that is gained through swimming lessons for parents and babies from 8 weeks old would be hugely beneficial and a great confidence building exercise for teenage Mums.

Introducing babies to swimming lessons at a young age has been proven to enhance children’s learning and for them to meet developmental milestones up to 20 months ahead of their peers
